PS 159 Cell Phone & Personal Internet-Enabled Device PolicyEffective Date: August 1, 2025
🎯 Purpose
To create a focused and distraction-free learning environment, PS 159 is limiting personal device use during school hours. This policy follows NY Education Law §2803 and NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) guidelines.
đź“‹ Devices Covered
Applies to all personal internet-enabled devices, including:
• Cell phones, smartphones
• Smartwatches, wearables
• Laptops, tablets, iPads
• Portable music or gaming devices
Devices are only allowed during the school day if required by an IEP/504 Plan or approved by the principal.
â›” When Devices Are Not Allowed
Devices may not be used between:
8:00 AM – 2:20 PM, including:
• Classes
• Lunch
• Recess
• Hallway transitions
Students are not to access devices from school entry until dismissal.
đź”’ Daily Routine
• On arrival, students place their devices in a lockable pouch, supervised by staff.
• Students carry the locked pouch throughout the day.
• At dismissal or early pickup, they unlock and retrieve their devices.
📞 Emergency Communication
• Parents/guardians may call the Main Office at (718) 584-6140 during school hours.
• In emergencies, students may be allowed to use a school phone.
• The school will contact families directly in urgent situations.
âś… Exceptions
Device use during the day is allowed only if:
• A valid IEP or 504 Plan requires it and the student does not have an NYCPS-issued device
• A documented medical or caregiving need is approved (e.g., diabetes monitoring)
To request an exception, contact School Administration.
⚠️ Violations & Disciplinary Action
Violations may lead to progressive discipline under:
• NYCPS Discipline Code
• Chancellor’s Regulation A-413
• NYCPS Internet Acceptable Use & Safety Policy (IAUSP)
Students will not be suspended solely for accessing a device.
Continued refusal may lead to further action, including possible suspension with approval.
đź“‚ Lost or Stolen Devices
PS 159 is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal devices.
Families may file claims with the NYC Comptroller’s Office.
